About the artist
Oil painting drew me into it's orbit some 20 years ago on a notion (from where? truly god only knows) that I create at least one truly beautiful painting, since then I have been on an ongoing journey to that very end. The journey has been slow as I've painted around work and life when I can. This prolonged often stuttered apprenticeship has allowed me to mature and develop as an artist. Initially self-taught, I spent some years developing my skills independently before seeking the guidance of a mentor to deepen my understanding of the techniques and discipline of the classical tradition, whom I continue to paint with regularly.
I am drawn to the classicist ideals of balance and form and have developed the skills of draughtmanship to express an idea as visually as close as I can to the finish it deserves. The act of painting remains an ever beguiling mystery, whatever the brief is I have confidence now that if I continue putting brush to canvas something of value and beauty will emerge however many detours there may be along the way. Originally hailing from Ireland I've lived in the UK for over 20 years, Brighton, the first place I've truly felt at home in the UK, it's a really lovely place, you should absolutely visit.
